The Pacific Northwest Panorama
The result will be a thrilling combination of map and art. The panorama covers the western halves of Washington and Oregon and the northern part of California. All of region's major landforms are rendered in detail, including the Cascades, Coast Ranges, Trinity Alps, and Olympics; Willamette Valley, Columbia River Gorge, and Puget Sound. At the same time it is possible to zoom in to see the subtleties of the great stratovolcanoes: Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, the Three Sisters, Mount Bachelor, Newberry Caldera, Crater Lake, Mount McLoughlin, Mount Shasta, and Lassen Peak. These natural features are displayed with major highways and cities and towns including Bellingham, Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, Portland, Salem, Eugene, Bend, Medford, and Redding.
The final map will be printed to be 5 feet tall and 30 feet wide! Contact us if you have a wall that large and are interested in exhibiting this mammoth piece of art.
Your view is floating high above the Pacific Ocean, looking eastward towards land. North and the Canadian border are on the left; south is on the right, leading to Oregon and then California. This map is oriented in the true meaning of the word, with east at the top.
Progress:The project is under development, but watch this space for progress as the panels are completed and the artwork cleaned up. Eventually this space will host the entire 621 miles with the ability to fill your monitor with your favorite volcano!
2/24/07: Uploaded draft version of northern 1/3 of project (almost entirety of Washington!). The edges, the ocean, and Vancouver Island still need to be cleaned up. My favorite areas to explore are the ridges of the Olympics and the deep glacial valleys near Mount Stuart. If you can't find them, don't worry - the final version will be labeled. You can really see how lahars roaring down the Carbon River and Puyallup River valleys of Mount Rainier are aimed right at Tacoma! (Mount Rainier is the great icy mass to the right of center.)
4/2/07: Uploaded draft of entire project (WA, OR, and northern CA). Also added National Park boundaries and the Pacific Crest Trail. I think the PCT may be the coolest thing about the map. There are still some small things to clean up like adding some coloring for Vancouver Island, and improving the ocean colors.
